FESTIVE OPENING KAREL APPEL HOUSE

Sunday the 25th of April 2010 the Karel Appel house was officially opened by COBRA artist Jan Sierhuis and Joop Appel, the brother of the late artist Karel Appel. The Karel Appel House which is located in the ‘Dapperbuurt’ honours Karel Appel, the famous artist who grew up in this Amsterdam neighbourhood.

The Karel Appel House is a short stay apartment facility for artist of the Rijksakademie and a yearly ‘minimuseum’ in collaboration with the renowned COBRA museum. DUS architects designed the interior for client De Key/Principaal. DUS was inspired by the working method of Appel, which is characterized by his phrase: I start from my matter – the paint and the canvas’. In a similar intuitive way, DUS designed an interior with 15 mm thin coloured steel walls. This resulted in a layered three-dimensional colour scheme, where there’s optimal room for living and exhibiting: A House of Canvas.

On April 25, 26 and 27 there are special tours through the Karel Appel House. The COBRA museum presents an exhibition on the life of Karel Appel. One can register for guided tours at: www.karelappelhuis.nl

SPONTANEOUSLY BUILT BUCKY BAR LEADS TO LARGE PUBLIC STREET PARTY

Visitors were asked to gather Friday night at 10 PM at a junction at Witte de With / Schiedamsevest and bring an umbrella to personally contribute to the spontaneous building. Exactly at 10 the party started in full swing, and old and young, architects and coincidental visitors danced together despite the cold. Umbrellas were attached to each other into one big shelter, so even a bit of rain didn't kill the party.

A spontaneous street party in winter? Last Friday evening Feb. 19th The Bucky Bar opened, a temporary public building designed by DUS architects. The dome-bar, entirely made of umbrella's, appeared seemingly suddenly out of nowhere on the street around a lamppost in the centre of Rotterdam. The fully equipped bar, complete with DJ and drinks, was directly built on site. Approximately 300 visitors danced under the umbrella roof, until at 2:00 AM the police ended the party, as there was no permit.

The Bucky Bar is part of a series of 5 unsolicited positive advises for the city, that DUS architects in a collaboration with SUA (Studio for Unsolicited Architecture) pasted onto billboards of existing building signs in the centre of Rotterdam.

The Bucky Bar was first in the series and realized on 19 February 2010. A spontaneous public building made from the most common of materials: an umbrella. As Buckminster Fuller showed us how minimal energy domes could open a way to a more environmentally sustainable future, could an umbrella dome lead the way to a more socially sustainable future? The Bucky Bar is a full-scale model of such a future. It shows the power of space for spontaneous gathering, for improvised shelters to host conversations, debates, games or even parties. Quote of the night: "when is the next party?!".

Cocoon by DUS Architects

In a quest for an interactive space within the Delft Faculty of Architecture, DUS Architects has created the 'Cocoon'- a flexible space that can 'parasite' at any given location. Its flexible skin responds both to internal user and external spectator, and thereby adds a new dimension to all types of environments.

The Cocoon is woven out of 150 inner bicycle tubes, measuring 20 meters each. The tubes can be inflated separately, which allows for a great variety in the appearance and tactility of the skin. The structure consists of rounded steel scaffolding, which are suspended by steel cables. This structure is very stable and ensures a safe amount of flexibility in the rubber skin, whilst accommodating up to eight people. The Cocoon has been exhibited at several locations in The Netherlands and Europe.

Recycled Bus Stop

This beautiful work of public art, as well as utility, titled Bottlestop Bus Shelter Project, is in Lexington, Kentucky.

Made by artist Aaron Scales, the bus stop was part of a national design competition. Inspired by discarded trash at the site, Scales went local with his work, constructing the bus stop out of all local Kentucky soft drink Ale-8-One bottles. The bus stop also uses LED lighting to illuminate the glass bottles at night; solar energy is collected during the day and used for the eye-popping nighttime light display. Beautiful and functional!

daniel libeskind worked as a design consultant to adamson associates to design
the retail and public space complex on the main las vegas strip as part of the MGM mirage's
citycenter construction project. citycenter, a vertical city in the heart of the las vegas strip
between the bellagio and monte carlo resorts, combines 2,700 private residences, two
400-room non-gaming boutique hotels, a dramatic 60-story, 4,000-room resort casino,
and approximately 500,000 sq.ft. of retail and entertainment facilities into a single urban core.
the project which was completed in late 2009 include collaborations between MGM mirage
and eight of the world’s foremost architects.

housed within crystalline, metal-clad shapes, high end retail shops line las vegas blvd and the avenue.
a dramatic entryway into the retail area from the strip draws pedestrians into the public arcade,
covered by an expressive, spiraling roof structure. in addition to providing access to retail shops,
the public spaces allow for a variety of urban experiences: a water feature at the entry, cafes
and a grand staircase leading to casino square at the end of the arcade, animating the whole space.
in addition to the main entry off las vegas blvd, there are two entries off the avenue as well as access
to the facility on the second level through pedestrian bridges over harmon avenue to the lifestyle hotel
and over the avenue from the mandarin oriental hotel. in addition to the casino, hotels and residential
buildings, the public retail complex is intended to add a vibrant program to the mixed-use development
on block c.

Exotic Residence in Singapore : The Fish House

The Fish House is an exotic residence designed by Guz Architects and located in Singapore. The main idea behind this home was to ensure a connection with nature and with the surrounding landscapes in particular. The Fish House is said to be a “modern tropical bungalow” that is perfectly integrated in its climate and environment, as its architecture and open spaces encourage natural ventilation and its floor to ceiling windows allow unobstructed views of the sea. Here is more information from the architects, regarding this project’s sustainable elements : “The idea of connection is reinforced by having the basement level media-room with a u-shaped acrylic window which allows diffuse natural light in and also views out into the pool. The curved roofs, which symbolize the sea waves, also emphasize the idea of the nearby sea. These are almost totally covered with thin bendable photovoltaic panels supplying enough energy to the house, while the remaining area is used as a green roof giving residents some outdoor leisure spaces.”

Love these so much and was at the same time inspired by Veliani’s self-made melting specs which her friend made for her to give out during the Parco next Next launch.

So when I couldn’t get my hands on these, I attempted to add some details to my own patent peep toes by squatting in the bathroom for almost an hour, dripping wax on them. And in fact they didn’t turn out too badly. But the wax just couldn’t stay on. Guess I’ll have to drop by Art Friend to get special wax and sculpting material and when I have the time… I’m going to create my very own masterpiece!

These are my favourites from the collection which included other pieces that leaned more towards the tribal and colours inspiration for this collection. I think what sets these apart are also the clever detailing and textures. The wedge this time looks more like a cross between a wedge and a platform heel. The arch at the base flatters the foot and gives the illusion of slimmer ankles the way well designed platform heels would, while the irregular outlines in striking colours adds to the streamlined effect and gives it the Pop Art touch.

So Far, Rodarte + Nicholas Kirkwood have proved to be a winning formula, producing collection after collection of fabulously unique pieces that make you sit up and stare in awe. C-2 House by Curiosity

The C-2 House designed by Curiosity is like a mini loft in the middle of the forest, it is unexpected and refreshing. The exterior appears like a huge abstract shape rising from the ground, with its shaped angle following the steep angle of the land. While the interior is filled with lights seems to coming from everywhere, between the ceiling and the walls, it has almost a religious feel creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. In the C-2 House, natural lighting become the artist of a live performance.

There was plenty about Marchesa's Fall 2010 collection that fit perfectly within the label's signature style. Long gowns entwined with ruffles, fluffy feathered skirts, and the mandatory injections of draping silk and tulle. But this time around there was also a strong selection of super-short playful (yet still phenomenally detailed) dresses that the current set of young socialites and starlets will no doubt be jumping all over as red carpet fare.

David Koma presented us with a highly graphic, structured yet easy collection this season.

While excellently executed we are tiring of the whole overly architectural silhouette trend and were expecting and needing to see something new. The Wilma Flintstone-esque seems and panelling emphasised the fitted nature of the pieces, removing the need for structural elements in this paired back collection. However there was nothing Stone Age about this, references were most definitely towards the future with the colour palette limited to a very minimal black, grey and nude.

In the latter part of the collection we were treated to some classic Koma with the 3D, spiral interpretation of the zigzag accompanied by our favourite soundtrack Cerrone’s Supernature which perfectly suited the mood. The beautifully crafted, glistening details made from zip teeth are stunning but more in an art sculpture type of way rather than the we want to wear this way.

Has you ever saw a moon so close that you could touch it? Russian artists Leonid Tishkov have created a series of artwork titled “Private Moon”, where he give life to a man and his moon.

“Private Moon” is a visual poem, telling a story about a man who found the Moon and stayed with her for the rest of his life.

In the upper world, in the attic of his house, he saw the Moon which had fallen from the sky. At first she was hiding from the sun in a dark, damp tunnel and was constantly frightened by the passing trains. Then she came to the house of the man.

Wrapping the moon in a thick blanket, he gives her autumn apples and drinks tea with her. When she finally recovers he puts her on a boat and carries her across a dark river to a high bank, where moon pine-trees grow.

He descends to the lower world wearing the clothes of his deceased father and then returns, illuminating the way with his private moon.

Transcending the borders between worlds via narrow bridges, sinking into sleep, taking care of the heavenly body, man turns into a mythological being living in the real world like in a fantastic fairy-tale.
